What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE means you have enough invested today that you can stop saving for retirementand let compounding do the rest. You still work to cover your current living expenses, but you no longer need to add to your retirement accounts — your existing balance will grow on its own to a full FIRE number by the age you choose. It's the moment the hardest part of the journey is behind you.

How the Coast FIRE number is calculated

First we find your full FIRE number — your annual expenses divided by your safe withdrawal rate (the 4% rule gives 25× expenses). Then we discount that back to today using your expected return and the years until retirement. The result is your Coast FIRE number: the amount that, invested now with no further contributions, grows to your FIRE target by retirement age.
